Volkswagen presents new eHybrid

VW is bringing two new plug-in hybrid versions of the Golf, now in the eighth generation, to its dealers: the Golf eHybrid and the new Golf GTE.

The eHybrid has an output of 150 kW, the GTE an impressive 180 kW. The Golf eHybrid should be available from 39,000 euros, the Golf GTE from a proud 42,500 euros.
Both versions serve different priorities. According to VW, the Golf eHybrid Drive should offer “maximum comfort”, while the Golf GTE offers a more sporty performance. These two models represent a total of eight different Golf and Golf Variant models with hybrid drive, which should be available from dealers by the end of the year. According to VW, this makes the Golf the brand's product line with the highest degree of hybridization.

The Golf is both a facelift of its classic predecessor and optically not too far removed from the ID.3. In addition to the two plug-in hybrids that are now for sale, there will be three mild hybrids (MHEV) with 48-volt systems, two variants with diesel engines and a natural gas model. The E-Golf, on the other hand, is out of the program.

Volkswagen makes a clear distinction between the Modular Transverse Module (MQB) in the Golf and the Modular Electrification Module (MEB) in the ID.3. This is also evident in the name eHybride. The two available versions have the same drive train and the battery has a capacity of 13 kWh. When their electrical energy is exhausted, a combustion engine with direct injection, turbocharger (TSI) and 1.4-liter displacement starts. The system is designed as a parallel hybrid, so that the electric motor works with four cylinders on one side and a 6-speed dual clutch transmission (DSG) on the other. The combined output is 150 or 180 kilowatts (kW), with the more powerful version again bearing the GTE label.

According to VW, the Golf eHybrid has a range of up to 80 kilometers in all-electric mode and the Golf GTE of up to 62 kilometers. The "E-mode" also enables purely electric driving on country roads and motorways. At higher speeds and depending on the hybrid mode, driving profile or battery charge level, the petrol engine switches on automatically. In terms of equipment, Volkswagen offers the Golf eHybrid in the upscale style version. Equipment such as the Digital Cockpit Pro, a leather steering wheel, driving and emergency braking assistants and a keyless start system are always on board.
