The car manufacturer Bentley in London was founded in 1919 and is purveyor to the British Royal Family. For many years Bentley was a trademark of Rolls-Royce. When Rolls-Royce went over to BMW, the company was named Bentley Motors Ltd. The founder Walter Owen Bentley won numerous races with its vehicles, such as 1923 the 24-hour race at Le Mans. During World War I aircraft engines were built at Bentley. 1931 the company ran into financial difficulties and was eventually taken over by Rolls-Royce. 1998 the Bentley brand was taken over by Volkswagen.
